Skipper Azpilicueta extends Chelsea deal to 2024

Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea's skipper, has signed a two year extension to his contract with the Premier League club. This announcement was made on Thursday (Aug 4) and ends media speculation about Azpilicueta's move to Spanish side Barcelona.

The four-year deal that the Spain international defender signed in 2018 was due to expire this year. However, reports claim that Chelsea extended his stay in London by offering him a new contract for a further one-year.

The 32-year old, who moved to Chelsea from Marseille in 2012, stated that she was happy to extend her stay. It's been almost 10 years since my first arrival and I joined the club. I feel the love and I'm excited for the new project that we have in our hands. Azpilicueta was linked to a switch from Barcelona, who signed Andreas Christensen, a former Chelsea defender.

Antonio Rudiger also left Chelsea to join Real Madrid as a free transfer in the closing season.

Todd Boehly, chairman of Chelsea, said that he was happy the club could keep Azpilicueta. Azpilicueta has won two Premier League titles, two Europa League crowns and the Champions League. We are delighted with our captain's exemplary leadership and commitment once again. Boehly stated that there is still much to be done together.
