Medvedev ends losing streak in finals with Los Cabos title

World No 1 Daniil Medvedev won his losing run in finals by beating Cameron Norrie of Britain 7-5 6-0 to win the title in Los Cabos (Mexico) and increase preparations for his US Open title defense.

Medvedev was forced to miss Wimbledon by Russia's invasion in Ukraine. He arrived in Mexico to play in the ATP 250 event, his first tournament since June.

Medvedev has had great success on hardcourts over the years and he didn't lose a set this week to win his first title of the season.

Medvedev stated that "every match was very good, but only the final is always special.

In the final, you play the best player this week, so it is always a high level match and I'm really pleased that I was able to show some good levels, some good shots during such an important match."

The Russian entered the contest against Norrie, last year's champion, who is ranked 12th in world rankings. Norrie has lost five consecutive finals, dating back to November's Paris Masters. The 26-year-old was then defeated in the championship match at last year's ATP Finals.

After losing the championship matches in Germany and the Netherlands, he was defeated in the final of The Australian Open.

Medvedev required treatment in the 11th match on Saturday after he had scraped his hand on court and drew some blood while hitting a ball. This happened shortly after Norrie, left-handed, had saved two set points to level it at 5-5 in the first set.

The Russian, who won his maiden Grand Slam title last year at Flushing Meadows, stepped up and won the next eight games to win the contest.

It wasn't easy. Medvedev stated that Cam is an incredible player and it was intense. "When you play Cam, you know you must fight for every point.

Actually bleeding helped my thinking a bit so that I could hold onto my nerves a little more. I have just been able to play well and that was enough for today.
