Joan Laporta believes FC Barcelona’s exists because of Mexican and US fans

FC Barcelona's brilliant performance in the Gamper Trophy was enough to launch the 2022/23 season. They beat Liga MX side PumasUNAM 6-0. Robert Lewandowski scored the first goal for the La Liga side. He was also named MVP of the match.

Barcelona's president Joan Laporta spoke with Hristo Stoichkov, a former legend of FC Barcelona, about the impact that American and Mexican fans have on the club. "We owe Mexico and the United States a lot. Barca is a result of the summer 1937 pre-season tour," stated Laporta.

It was interesting because the club was able make a lot of money thanks to that tour and they put it into a Paris account and that saved them. We were at serious risk of losing the club so we had to use emergency funds in order to keep Barcelona afloat. The money from the tour helped,, Laporta said.

Will Barca make a comeback to Mexico?

After a pre-season tour to the United States, La Liga's side returned to Spain and played four exhibition matches. Before returning to Spain to prepare the season, Barcelona faced Inter Miami, Real Madrid and Juventus before playing against NY Red Bulls. All of the games were played in different US cities and all the stadiums were full, which resulted in a significant revenue for Barcelona.

Laporta also spoke about the possibility that Barca could return to Mexico for a preseason tour for all the fans there and said that the chances are high. "We must do something in Mexico, because there are many competitive teams. Emilio Azcarraga, the owner of La Liga, organized that event. It was our last match there. We played only one game, and we will be back soon."
