ETSU hires Brenda Mock Brown as new women’s hoops coach

JOHNSON CITY (TNN) -- East Tennessee State hired Brenda Mock Brown Monday as the Buccaneers' new women’s basketball coach. This comes one week after East Tennessee State announced that Simon Harris would be fired due to Title IX issues during his lone season.

Richard Sander, interim athletic director, announced Brown's new role at a news conference on Monday.

Brown is the program's 10th coach. Between 2012 and 2020, she was UNC Asheville's women's basketball coach. She led the Bulldogs to four consecutive postseason berths in 2015 and 2019, and two consecutive Big South Tournament titles.

In 2015-16, she was also named Big South Coach of Year. She led the largest turnaround season in Division I, going 9-22 to 26-7.

After the resignation of AD Scott Carter, Sander was appointed interim athletic director. ETSU also announced Harris' suspension with pay until August 15, when his firing will become official. Two former players claimed discrimination and unfair treatment in this spring's investigation.

Brown spent the last two years at Global Sports and Events and was a consultant at Inkwell Sports Solutions.

She was also an assistant coach at Florida Tech, Charlotte, Jacksonville, and Georgia Tech. Brown was a Wake Forest player and was a two time captain.
